Before we sign on to more ...we want reasons why we should. We may want to be the recipients of those who embrace our ideals without question, but we don't always like it when someone else says like the Nike commercial promotes: "Just do it!"
But, reasons can be very beneficial, and should often assist in understanding and decision-making. We don't want to appear too careless.
**************************************************
God ---I don't see much of a 'meet you halfway' commitment with this. You either believe in God, or you don't.
Now, there may be many roads, and even more beliefs along those roads ...but, we are quoting John 3:16 here, perhaps the most quoted verse in the Bible. (Though not by those who readily offer disclaimers, as they'd often feel more comfortable if we not talk about the Bible at all ...and they usually only quote a partial verse: "Judge not ...". It is common for those who like to dispute the Bible, to quote mostly partial verses, or selective ones only.)
For the rest of us, who believe that the entire Bible should be looked at, though there may be many roads ...only one leads to salvation. But, I'm getting ahead of myself here. For now, it may seem a fair question to ask if we believe in the Bible.
Do you??
It would be fruitless to look at the depth of this verse if you don't believe in the source of the verse.
Unless, of course, if you are one of those with a seemingly unlimited supply of disclaimers ...and in that case, you may be be carrying a basket of rotten fruit.
****************************************************
so ---It is an adverb that describes the depth of either a verb or an adjective. The dictionary says it is the way or manner shown, expressed, indicated, or understood. Suppose someone tells you, "That's nice."
What do you think?? You may think they aren't even listening.
But, what if they say, "That is so nice!" Doesn't that sound more like they are listening, and perhaps even a bit impressed??
It really magnifies the next word, and in this case, the next word is loved.
*************************************
loved ---In our society, this word could mean very much, or it often means very little. That's the purpose of the first word, "For" ...as it is about to tell us the reason, purpose, and direction of this potentially very indepth word.
(No, it's not cheating if you want to use your Concordance also.)
*************************************
the ---This simply specifies and helps us know. (No, this is not talking about multiple worlds ...it is the world, earth if you prefer.)
***************************************
world ---This has become so much more complex today, as we have so many people putting so much focus on 'climate change' ...and saving the planet. I was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We like the clean air up there ...and all of the mostly clean water. I am definitely for those things. And when the summer months come, and it gets a bit warmer for us Yoopers ...the air and water does not suddenly become unclean because of the summer climate change.
The Book of Revelation says God is going to destroy the world, and give us a new one. So, whether you are in favor of redecorating, or not ...it is clearly not our planet that God is saying He loves. It is us people in it.
***************************************
that ---I'm not claiming to be something I'm not, so no need to call the grammar police. I'm far from competent in the language area, even with the aid of dictionaries and website assistance ...but, I'm trying. You could say I'm a trying person, but don't discount the message just because it may not be presented as eloquently as may fit your desires. In the Bible, Moses tried to excuse himself because he felt he wasn't eloquent ...but, God chose to use Moses in a mighty way.
In our 1998 Presidential debates, the Vice-Presidential candidates had a go of it ...and Texas Senator Bentsen provided a memorable zinger to Dan Quayle when Dan compared his experience to that of Kennedy's before he took office, "You are no Jack Kennedy!"
So, likewise, in comparing my lack of eloquence, you could rightly say to me, "You are no Moses!"
Okay, it appears I am elaborating the most on one of the least of the words: the word ...that. But, that is how it often goes. We don't want to intellectually challenge in an area that has been so thoroughly covered. And with Facebook, Twitter, and whatever other means there are to communicate out there (which I am not very much in pace with) ...we can all be the promoter of our own messages. I never heard a preacher give a message on the word 'that', so I guess I got carried away (like many of you do at times). But, the difference with me is that ...though many of you may seem content with a small and often comparatively meaningless tweet, you can see that I am seldom satisfied with such brevity.
Well, in conclusion (at least for this word), this is just what it seems to me to be, that the word 'that' in a way seems to function like the word 'for' ...providing the link for the presentation that provides the reason for that which is forthcoming.
******************************************
He ---I like to capitalize the pronoun, as it is referring to God, whom we also capitalize.
******************************************
gave ---A gift is something given, and since God has the unique characteristic of being omniscient ...that means He knows all about the gift, and about who is going acknowledge the value of it, therefore receiving it.
God is omnipresent, so we can't be at the wrong place at the wrong time. If He chooses to give us a gift, we won't miss out on it ...as may be the case on certain deals, as we can imagine being at the wrong store and don't make it to the right one before closing time (maybe we don't need to imagine, as this may have happened to you).
God is also omnipotent ...so no way is anyone or anything going to prevent Him from giving. And everything that is, He created, so what He has ...it is his choice to give.
Evolutionists, if they say they believe in the Bible, it must be restricted to only what value selected verses serve their already scripted narrative ...but, the Bible is not a book to pick and choose what verses serve our own beliefs best, in our own eyes. The Bible is God showing us who He is, and clearly we were created whole, not to evolve. (For those who like the phrase 'judge not' ...the 'in their own eyes' phrase come from the Book of Judges.)
Yes, for those who do not believe in all the verses of the Bible, or attempt to scoff at someone else's interpretation ...usually this is where the "Judge not ..." continually makes its self-proclaimed grand entrance, over and over again.
But, 'gave' is not just how, but also for what purpose ...as God is omniscient, and knows exactly what purpose He is giving for ...for all of us. And also, God knows precisely what's going to happen & how it's going to play out. We celebrate Christmas every year, but if we decided to do something extra special on a different occasion...it would be impossible to successfully have a surprise party for God.
But, thankfully it would also be impossible for someone to spoil God's plans for us.
The only way we could miss it, can be compared to an invitation we get through the mail ...and we respond by saying we can't make it.
*******************************************
His ---This designates belonging ...and the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit all belong to One another, which is not another, but One. I don't quite understand this, but it is clearly so, and is frequently stated in the Bible ...so, it's not just one statement, one time, for our own interpretation, or our careless privilege to choose to ignore. (More on that, listed under ...Son.)
*******************************************
only ---This designates exclusivity. We can say, only two. We can say, only five ...or we can even say, only five hundred, if we are expecting five thousand.
But, here ...we will see, it refers also to One.
*******************************************
begotten ---Basically, it follows that 'begotten' means 'comes from'. And here we are to understand that ...that which is being referred to, 'comes from' that One, who we spoke of.
Many times, that which 'comes from' ...is also a part of. But, in this case, the part of ...is actually the entire part, the whole, and entirely Holy.
********************************************
Son ---This is fully relationship understanding. The only Son of God, who is entirely One, in and of Himself ...the distinction being no less than Oneness.
How is this??
It is near impossible for me to even be remotely satisfied with whatever I can write to describe this. Yet, isn't that precisely why we have the Bible, God's Word ...His description to us.??
We know that 'Son' refers to Jesus ...yet, though we don't know the reference before the six-day Creation, we do not see Him being referred to as 'Son', or as Jesus during the Creation.
And furthermore, those who think the Bible is too much male, or man-oriented ...with our limited understanding of it, it may seem that way. But, it is not gender so much, but relationship. In truth, Jesus lived on earth a little over two thousand years ago ...as man. But, that is because He came as a human like us ...and He was not going to have a gender identity crisis. It was His position relationship-wise. God, angels, and we humans are all persons. And all humans which believe (we have not yet addressed the word 'believe', so at this time will not elaborate on what that means) ...yes, all who believe, it is referring to us humans as the bride of Christ. That is not a feminine reference, it is positionally ...in our relationship with Him. The man is often referred to as the 'provider' of the family unit God has set up for us...and God does the providing with us. Women are to receive the provision ...and children come forth, as the foremost responsibility of parents to share in the knowledge of our relationship, especially with God. In eternal life we are to receive the provision, as the bride of Christ ...if we accept the marriage, or bond and commitment offered with His promise to us.
Some people don't believe in marriage, or don't believe in it the way it is to be ...and some people don't believe in God, or the way He is. Yet, if we do believe we have a place provided for us, it will be without any interference from that which seeks to change or ultimately destroy. (Of course, I have not yet reached the words, 'Believe' or 'in'.)
All of the angels were to understand how they were to be positionally ...in relation to God. Those who chose not to ...began a rebellion. That rebellion continues ...and continues to confuse, in an attempt to steal our opportunity to receive the greatest of gifts.
*********************************************
that ---The first that is that which He did. This that is the meaning behind what He did for us. As great a feeling as it is to be loved, this is the "no greater love" spoken of (in John 15:13). Yes, He gave His own life.
Why??
Well, the that will take care of that ...linking that which follows.
*********************************************
whosoever ---'Who' usually begins a question which begs an answer ...and we wonder 'who'?? Yet, the word 'whosoever' does not imply the same limitation ...it can include everyone, or anyone who.
But, anyone who what??
*********************************************
believes ---Whosoever 'believes' ...believe means to accept something as true. Yet, something must go with it ...there has to be something to believe, whether true or imagined.
We may believe by the nature of trust we assign to any given thing or person. "By the looks of those clouds, I believe it's going to rain."
We may believe of something. We can believe of the validity of tornado warning which the weather channel alerts us of.
In 1384, John Wycliffe wrote in the prologue to his translation of the Bible, "The Bible is for the government (or governing) of the people, by the people, and for the people ..."
In 1863, Abraham Lincoln gave his now famous Gettysburg Address which included " ...of the people, by the people, and for the people ...", but also added, " ...shall not perish ...". He was referring to government, but he did mention " ...this nation, under God ..."
We can say the Bible is for the people ...and by our Creator.
**********************************************
in ---We believe in people, as to the more indepth character and nature of any one person. It provides confidence and motivation. It was a great help to me that my parents really believed in me, as I was growing up ...inclusive of now, as I still am.
Believe by ...depends often by the information we are fed.
Believe of ...usually gives a little more evidence, acknowledging the existence of. Though often there are those who do not want to acknowledge (Those referring to those who choose to ignore of the life that exists, as sadly they do not hear the silent pleas. A lung without air cannot cry out audibly ...yet, a heart without compassion has difficulty doing the same.)
Believing in ...requires placing a high value in something, and if we place the high value in the right things, we can hopefully realize that we also obtain increased value (inclusive of understanding) in doing so.
*********************************************
Him ---We must not forget we are talking about God ...three Persons in One. The previous 'His' referred to the 'Father' ...and 'Him' here, refers to the 'Son'. Yet, don't forget what we don't understand, is presented in our language to aid us ...to help us to at least more closely understand.
*********************************************
shall ---Is a commitment to do ...on one part. Yet, the receiving end of that same commitment is what we read in the dictionary: shall ---"to be indebted". The fullness of this is for our total benefit, and I firmly believe we should be wholeheartedly grateful for this promise.
We aren't ...but we can continually remind ourselves to be.
********************************************
not ---Wait!! The word 'shall' was followed by the word 'not'.
So, the 'shall' or the 'not' can be pleasant news, or not at all ...all depending upon the next word, and the positive or negative value we place upon that next word.
********************************************
perish ---Okay, since perish means to be destroyed, ruined or wiped out ...I don't think we want that. I am so thankful for the previous 'not'.
***********************************************
but ---This word provides an alternative. Especially if the first choice is not favorable in our eyes, it's good to have an alternative. But, our eyes often do not see things as they are ...only God is omniscient. But, in this case, I think it's safe to say that to 'perish' is not safe.
The alternative has to be better than that.
Too bad more people don't believe that both are real.
**********************************************
have ---We cannot 'have' unless He gave. This is especially true when only He can 'give' the highly valued commodity. And He also decides the condition of believing for the receiver ...each one who can 'have'.
By now, you should know that the condition was met by Jesus, in whom we are to believe.
**********************************************
everlasting ---This means it doesn't end ...it is not temporal, but eternal.
********************************************
life ---Also draws mention to the alternative & the condition of it. The alternative to this is not so attractive ...it is death. And it is so sad for those who wish for it upon themselves because they don't understand the great gift of eternal life that awaits our accepting of it.
